Yesterday we were visited by Auckland Transport to train us how to be safe on a scooter.
First we had to get our helmets fitted correctly. To see if the helmet fits correctly you have
to use the 2 finger salute from your eyebrows to your helmet. Your helmet should be
touching your fingers if it's the correct fit. The 'v' on the side of the helmet straps should
be the same size of your 2 fingers doing the peace sign. The strap at the bottom should
only be able to fit one finger between the strap and your chin.
After that we went onto our scooters to test the brakes and see how accurate we were to
stop on the white line.
We also learnt how to do one type of emergency stop. We need to use this to stop
quickly and safely if we are about to hit something, like a dog or cat. It also stops us
from smashing our faces into the handlebars.
The next activity was seeing where the right places to scooter were and where the unsafe
places to scooter were. Some places that are good to scooter are in the park, on the
footpath and on your driveway if the adults know. Some of the bad places to scooter are
on muddy land, on the beach and on the road.
Finally we had to do the final test to receive our licence which was to learn the last
emergency stop and to go through the obstacle course correctly. The obstacle course
was the small version of a zebra crossing. We had to cross this correctly and we had to
do an emergency stop before a driveway so this pretend car didn't hit you. Then you had
to repeat the course. Then the man would tell you if you had passed the test or NOT!
I really enjoyed this session because it was fun to have a scooter for a break and also to
learn some stuff like how your helmet is to be put on properly using the 2,4,1 rule
